How Rema Project Achieved Reliable 3D Protection with Blickfeld LiDAR

Overview

When a client required an advanced security solution for a warehouse area containing valuable goods, Rema Project relied on Blickfeld 3D LiDAR sensors to bridge a critical gap that traditional security systems could not address.

Challenge

Securing warehouse environments overnight presents a unique set of difficulties due to their highly dynamic nature during operating hours. In this specific facility, goods and pallets are constantly moved, stacked, or removed throughout the day. A flat, empty floor on Monday might be filled with tall piles of palletized goods by Tuesday evening.

The central challenge was finding a reliable overnight monitoring system that would not trigger false alarms due to these daily structural changes. Standard security equipment – such as traditional motion detectors or 2D camera analytics – is inherently limited in such environments. Conventional motion sensors rely on fixed detection zones; when pallet stacks are introduced, they either block the sensor to create massive blind spots or trigger anti masking alarms because of the changes in environment. Video cameras similarly struggle with accuracy, as 2D analytics cannot accurately process dynamic 3D geometry and do not perform well in low light environment.

The client needed an uncompromising security solution that could automatically accept whatever new pallet layout existed at closing time, reliably guard against unauthorized human intrusion in the dark, and eliminate false alarms caused by shifted stock.

Solution

To solve this, Rema Project deployed Blickfeld’s 3D LiDAR security sensors “QbProtect”, mounting them strategically to cover the flexible storage area from a side vantage point. Unlike traditional sensors that rely on static, two-dimensional zones, the sensor covers the entire field of view and adds a single, large 3D monitoring zone.

The system’s effectiveness lies in its automated background learning capability. During the day, while normal warehouse operations take place and stock is moved around, the monitoring zone remains turned off. In the evening, when the security system is armed for overnight surveillance, the sensors scan the storage area and automatically learn the new background layout as it stands at that exact moment. Any pallets that were relocated during the day become part of this updated static baseline and will not trigger an alarm. However, if a person enters the monitored area during the night, the sensor instantly detects the new, unauthorized object and triggers the alarm.

Results

The implementation successfully provided reliable security coverage for the warehouse area – a task that standard technologies could not effectively handle. By capturing 3D spatial data and adapting to shifting pallet arrangements, the Blickfeld sensors closed coverage gaps and improved the facility’s overall security level.

Additionally, the solution reduced daily operational friction. While alternative systems often generate false alarms or complicate system arming when inventory is moved, the Blickfeld deployment allowed for smooth, trouble-free daily (or rather nightly) operation.

Standard security systems and solutions often look good on paper, but they fail in real-life situations. With the LiDAR sensor, we were able to provide the customer reliable high-level security - not just on paper. We are happy to have this product in this particular project.

Outlook
