Accurate clinker storage monitoring with LiDAR ensures precise CO₂ tax calculations and improves inventory management.
A global leader in the building materials industry sought an innovative and reliable approach to monitor the storage volume of clinker—a key component in cement manufacturing. With tightening regulations around CO₂ emissions, the company aimed to optimize CO₂ tax calculation in cement production by implementing a solution that delivers accurate, real-time clinker stockpile measurement.
The company faced significant challenges in measuring the volume of clinker stored in its large clinker hall. Without a precise measurement system, it relied on indirect methods that often led to discrepancies between actual and reported volumes. These inaccuracies impacted CO₂ tax calculation, risking both overpayment and non-compliance. Manual adjustments to inventory data were common, leading to inefficiencies and increased labor costs.
To solve this, the company implemented Blickfeld’s LiDAR-based clinker stockpile measurement system. Twelve LiDAR sensors were installed across the clinker hall, generating a continuous, high-density 3D point cloud to capture exact stockpile volumes. The data is processed onboard and integrated into the company’s ERP system, providing always-up-to-date volume and mass readings—no manual measurement required.
Since implementation, the company has significantly improved the accuracy of its clinker stockpile measurement, reducing manual inventory adjustments by more than 80%. This has led to more reliable and efficient CO₂ tax calculation in cement production, with less risk of non-compliance and lower administrative overhead. The availability of precise, automated volume data has also enhanced the company’s inventory accuracy and digital production workflows.
Building on the success of the clinker hall integration, the company is expanding Blickfeld’s LiDAR solution to other facilities with similar bulk material monitoring needs. Recently, a two-sensor setup was implemented in a smaller storage bunker, supporting the company’s goal to enhance inventory accuracy and operational efficiency across its locations.
