Master thesis (m/f/d) signal processing for ranging algorithm development / optimal filtering in the presence of correlated noise

full-time

Your mission

Our lidar sensors are industry-leading in terms of size, weight, and point cloud performance. Still, there is lots of potential! Can we get to an even better ranging with the right processing algorithms? Help us find the theoretical boundaries, and find a practical implementation that gets us closer to the limit!
Supported by our experts, you will understand the physical and electrical properties of our detector and deep-dive into our signal processing requirements. You come up with criteria for theoretical limits, and validate your ideas with data from our detector simulation framework. With these results, you come up with a real-world algorithm idea that is tailored for our latest sensor architecture. The icing on the cake is the implementation of your algorithm in real hardware.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer compensation for work on these theses.

Your tasks

  • Find theoretical limits of detection of a signal in the presence of both uncorrelated (mainly ambient light) and correlated (detector) noise
  • Implement an optimum performance algorithm (Python or C++)
  • Explore different ways to implement an approximation feasible on the real system
  • Implement a promising algorithm candidate on FPGA (with the help of our FPGA team)

Your profile

  • You are currently studying (Electrical) Engineering, Computer Science, Physics
  • You have an excellent electrical engineering background and you are able to understand physical models of photodetectors such as APD, SiPM and SPAD
  • You have a solid understanding of Information Theory and Signal Processing, including sampling theorem, filtering, frequency domain, and noise modelling.
  • You have experience in Python and/or C++
  • Ideally, you have first experience with FPGA (VHDL) development

Why Blickfeld?
